Vancouver Police are investigating what they’re calling a unique situation of what appears to be a driver who overdosed at the wheel.
Staff Sergeant Randy Fincham says this is the first time he’s seen anything like this.
“Does this case now, the administration of naloxone, allow us to investigate this person, apply for warrants through the hospital to conduct further investigations to determine if that person was actually impaired when they operated that car. Certainly to the general public and anybody seeing that video, you’d look at that and say that person is obviously impaired.”
The driver was traveling along Columbia St. near East Hastings early Wednesday morning when a bus driver noticed him driving erratically and eventually slouch over the wheel.
Fincham says test results are paramount to the case.
“We would now look at applying to a justice, applying to a judge for permission to get that blood from the hospital to further our investigation. We certainly need to satisfy that justice that we do have those reasonable grounds now. At this point, it’s quite likely that we do.”
The driver gained full consciousness after paramedics gave him two doses of naloxone.
