Richmond will not be following in Vancouver’s footstep to regulate short term rentals like Airbnb.
Richmond City Council voted unanimously to prohibit short term rentals.
Mayor Malcolm Brodie says the city is instead looking to enforce its current bed and breakfast bylaws.
“Six people maximum, operator of the bed and breakfast has to have the premises as his or her principal residence.”
He admits coming down hard on enforcement won’t be easy with nearly 1600 short term listings on websites, and that its back to the drawing board.
“We instructed staff to go back and tell us structurally how the program would work, and tell us where our bylaws need to be bolstered in order to do that.”
A report is due back to council in two months.
