Leave Vancouver’s sand on the beach, please.
That’s the message from the Vancouver Park Board, after reports of some Vancouverites pilfering sand from local beaches to use on their driveways.
Board Chair Michael Wiebe says anyone busted stealing sand could be hit with a fine of up to $2,000.
“It’s something that we are asking people not to do because sand is part of the ecosystem that our beaches are as we like to keep our natural settings the way they are.”
He says with the recent salt frenzy, and reports of people now turning to the beaches, staff will be keeping an eye on the shoreline.
“There will be people that will be monitoring and if we do see someone, of course, that will be handed out.”
Wiebe says beaches are patrolled in winter at all times.
