While the City of Vancouver has given the all-clear to skating on Trout Lake, the City of Surrey says it doesn’t sanction skating on any frozen lakes or other bodies of water.
Acting Manager of Parks for the City of Surrey Tim Neufeld says in spite of the conditions, the city doesn’t want anyone skating on outdoor ice.
He says they can’t guarantee safety.
“We don’t inspect or certify the thickness of ice on any of our open bodies of water in parks so we wouldn’t be able to say if they’re safe or not.”
He says it’s a safety and liability issue.
“And the fact we are not able to get out there and inspect and monitor and ensure the ice is thick enough for people to get on it and use it safely.”
Neufeld says, however, ice should be about five inches or thicker before it’s considered safe for skating and other outdoor activities.
