Icy roads have created havoc for Metro Vancouverites this winter, and now boats near Westham Island are being affected by the cold.
Chris Bryan with TransLink says the Westham Island Bridge, which connects the Island to Ladner Village, will remain in a “fixed” position.
“We are only operating the swing bridge at Westham Island Bridge for marine traffic for emergency traffic only, so what that means is that vehicle traffic, cars, trucks, can still travel over the bridge.”
He says there is a risk of critical failure during extreme cold weather.
Bryan says the bridge will remain in that position until temperatures rise above zero.
CKNW reached out to the Ministry of Transportation to see if any other swing bridges are facing similar issues but has not heard back.
