An expert in addiction treatment with St. Paul’s Hospital says the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons is making steps to include addiction medicine with all other specialties.
Dr. Annabel Mead says right now training programs are being developed to allow doctors to certify – and be accredited – for specializing in treating addictions.
She says this just makes sense.
“It is a chronic, relapsing medical condition that should have the same attention and the same resources and the same specialist training for doctors to be able to manage it you know, like you would manage any other severe, relapsing chronic condition
Mead says treating addiction medicine like other specialty areas will encourage more new doctors to take this training.
“They are developing training programs at a national level so that doctors can certify and then get this recognition and accreditation as being addiction medication specialists.”
