An unsanctioned pop-up supervised injection site in the downtown east side has finally received some government funding it’s been desperately waiting for.
Vancouver Coastal Health has brought the pop-up site under its wing.
The site has been up and running with volunteers since late September – just last week it was replaced with a trailer.
Volunteer Sarah Blyth says moving forward – the health authority will be supplying volunteers with harm-reduction supplies and paying staff.
“They are helping fund our peer workers which is something that we’ve been doing all along, that’s paying people in the community to come in. We also have volunteers who come in that don’t get an honorarium.”
Blyth says the site can see up to 200 users a day.
The site is open 12 hours a day seven days a week.
