A man was rescued in the Comox Valley after being stuck in his car since Christmas Day.
Comox Valley Ground Search & Rescue Search Manager Paul Berry says the man had intended to climb the Comox Glacier, up to Mt Argus and Red Pillar, but became stuck due to harsh conditions.
The man realized he was not going to get out of his situation, and set out an emergency beacon.
RCMP received the alert and notified Berry and his team.
“Once we had assessed the avalanche conditions we knew that we could proceed. It’s quite steep in the area and a significant number of avalanche paths but the snow pack was safe enough that we could proceed,” Berry says.
The vehicle ended up being six kilometers from the beacon location, but the man was found in good spirits.
Berry says he was well prepared and had set up a tent and brought food.
“It was a very ambitious trek that he had planned, and would be very difficult to complete in these types of conditions.”
Berry says that it’s really important for people to be fully aware of the conditions that exist when heading into back country.
