The head of the organization running the first pop-up injection site in Victoria says the first few days have been surprising.
“We’re seeing more people than we expected at this point. You know we only have two booths inside the trailer so I think the need is going to be much greater than what we have capacity for. We had about thirty people the first day. Yesterday we had 42 people so it’s growing certainly as people get more aware of it it is drawing people in,” says Don Evans with Our Place Society says this has come with a spike in overdoses.
“We’ve already had one this morning and we already had three, possibly four yesterday.”
He says another mobile unit is in the works to be set up in Victoria and it can’t come soon enough.
Overdose deaths in Victoria are more than three times what they were last year.
The island has seen the greatest increase in OD deaths per capita – up 153 per cent over last year.
