Police in Melbourne, Australia say they have arrested seven suspects who allegedly planned a series of deadly bomb attacks on Christmas day.
According to Victoria state Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton, the attacks were due to take place in the city’s Flinders Street train station, Federation Square and St.Paul’s Cathedral.
Nikole Gunn, senior anchor with Triple M Melbourne, says the attacks would have had devastating results had they gone ahead.
“This was a major operation across Melbourne through the night. We had 400 police officers with Victoria Police and federal police and also the security agency, ASIO, they have raided a number of properties across Melbourne’s North Western suburbs, arresting seven people so far. It appears these people have been self-radicalised and were followers of the Islamic State.”
Melbourne police say they had been watching the alleged plotters for some time.
