The organization that now runs Vancouver’s recycling program says the weather – not the switch to private contractors – is behind missed pickups in the city.
The city of Vancouver turned over pickup duties to Multi Material BC back in October – and this month – residents began reporting missed service.
MMBC Managing Director Allen Langdon says this year’s winter weather is to blame.
“Since the snow we’ve had instances where there’s just some areas that were not accessible, just either the combination of snow and slippery conditions combined with maybe the grade of the road have made it almost impossible – or impossible for trucks to get into some areas.”
But he says they’re now out in force trying to clear the backlog.
“So our contractor Smithrite has a full complement of trucks out, they’ve got additional trucks they’re bringing in as well as additional crew members. We’re also going to have additional crew members out on Friday as well as a full crew working on Saturday. So I think right now what we’re trying to do is clear the routes as quickly as possible.”
Langdon says they’ve got extra crews out now and are hoping to get the backlog cleared as soon as possible.
