Investigators have confirmed that a cigarette butt was the cause of a roaring Langley condo fire last Sunday.
The fire at the Paddington Station complex left more than 100 people without a home.
“Caused by smokers material, butt from a cigarette that was disposed of improperly from a balcony. Unfortunately, this is a regular occurrence in the City of Langley,” says Langley City Councillor Nathan Pachal.
Pachal says many displaced families will end up spending Christmas in hotels.
In the past five years, the City of Langley says they’ve responded to 18 reports of balcony fires. Nine of those were caused by “improper disposal of smoker’s material – usually cigarettes butted out in planters.”
Potting soil often contains peat moss which is combustible.
