Pest Control Provider Orkin Canada is out with the top five rattiest cities in B.C.
Vancouver take’s the top spot for B.C.’s rattiest city.
Bill Green with Orkin Canada explains why it tops the list.
“It’s a port city, surrounded by the water, you have a lot of ships coming in and out. The density of the city contributes to the factor, they’re all connected underneath, and so you have a lot of stuff happening underground. The SkyTrain is underground, the buildings are all connected underground together.”
Green says more can be done by people and the city.
“Sidewalks, alleyways, those are the areas that remain reservoirs for the rodents or the dumpsters. I don’t want to throw the city under the bus because I don’t think they have the money or the manpower to deal with it.”
Victoria comes in at number two, followed by Burnaby, Richmond and Surrey at number five.
Orkin Canada based its rankings on residential and commercial treatments from December last year to November this year.
The City of Vancouver says there are a number of preventative measures that property owners can take to protect their property from pests such as eliminating food sources, keeping the property clean and sealing holes and cracks in homes.
“There were 1,047 rodent-related cases reported to 3-1-1 in 2015 compared to 710 in 2016 up until August 31. Comparing the same period from January 1 to August 31 in 2016 to the previous year, there was a 5% decrease in rodent calls to the City,” read an email to CKNW.
The city says the majority of complaints received are during the summer when people spend more time outdoors.
