‘Tis the season of giving… but according to a new report by the Fraser Institute, British Columbians are feeling less charitable every year.
The report found charitable giving in Canada has hit a 10-year-low.
Author Charles Lammam says the report compared provinces to US states and found Americans give twice as much.
As for B.C.’s performance, Lammam says, “Very close to the bottom. And the trends that we’ve observed across Canada are happening in British Columbia where we are seeing a fairly significant decline in the share of Canadian tax filers donating to charity as well as the share of income that they donate.”
As the holiday season approaches, he says it’s important to reflect on the challenges charities face.
Meanwhile the Union Gospel Mission says the report comes at a time when donations are needed the most.
Jeremy Hunka says, “I think the holiday season is a time to reflect on giving, and with Canadians becoming less generous every year, charities face greater challenges to secure the resources to help those in need.”
Hunka says that as committed donors age, they may not be replaced by younger donors – taking a toll on steady donations.
