Crew from the Kits Coast Guard base was deployed this afternoon to reports of an oily sheen in English Bay.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says crews were unable to determine its source, but reported a smell of diesel.
It says the Coast Guard is monitoring the situation, but that the substance floating on the water’s surface is not recoverable.
It says sheens of this type are unfortunately common in Vancouver’s waters, but that a small amount of material can spread out to appear much larger than it is.
The issue of spills in English Bay is a sensitive one for many Vancouverites, after the MV Marathassa spilled 27,000 litres of bunker fuel back in 2015.
