Members of the federal NDP caucus met downtown alongside Grand Chief Stewart Phillip to discuss the federal approval of the Kinder Morgan pipeline.
The decision was deemed ‘appallingly irresponsible’ by a number of MPs who attended.
“The New Democrats caucus stand firm with British Columbians and those who oppose this decision and this betrayal from the Prime Minister,” says MP for Vancouver East Jenny Kwan.
Kwan says members of the NDP have written a joint letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau calling for him to reverse his decision.
MP for Burnaby South, Kennedy Stewart, says residents living in areas where the pipeline will run through are living in fear that they will soon hear from Kinder Morgan about the fate of their homes.
“People are going to get a knock on the door from Kinder Morgan employees that are going to say ‘we want to survey your land’ and then they’ll come back and if they want it, they’re going to say ‘we want your house.’
The meeting comes just two days after B.C. NDP leader John Horgan revealed he is unequivocally opposed to the project.
