Syrian refugees are hosting a ‘thank you dinner’ for Mount Pleasant residents who welcomed them into the community last year.
The event, organized by a group of Syrian women, will include cultural dance displays, songs and traditional Syrian food.
Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House executive director Jocelyne Hamel says the women wanted to give back after receiving such a warm welcome.

“They’ve actually created this whole event which will showcase a very ancient culture and civilization, which they are very proud of. And they want to be still connected to it, and they want to showcase it to people who may not know how rich their culture really is.”
Hamel says the event is also about celebrating the merging of cultures.
“The response that Canadians have had to Syrian refugees who have come in in this past year has been overwhelmingly positive, and so the group that we’re working with has had that experience and they really just want to be able to have the opportunity to give back to the community and show their appreciation.”
The ticketed event takes place at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House Saturday night, and is open to all.
