The City of Vancouver has partnered up with YWCA Vancouver to build affordable housing for single mothers and their children, and Fire Hall is being built right along with it.
It’s a six-story building on 54th and Kerr Street.
The first two floors will house a rebuild of Fire Hall No 5, the remaining four floors will see two and three bedroom suites for a total of 31 units.
Kavitha Cariappa, a single mom says it’s tough providing for two children.
“I can say absolutely impossible and it’s something we always fear, if we have a safe place for us to put our heads down to sleep at night.”

Cariappa says she’s looking forward to living in the facility once it’s built.
Units will go from $500 to $980 a month.
Completion date is set for Summer 2018.
