The Commercial Drive business community is calling for a more visible police presence in the neighbourhood.
Executive Director Nick Pogor says a recent stabbing outside of a popular pizza joint, and man wielding a meat clever at the SkyTrain station are part of a growing trend of safety and security issues in the neighbourhood.
“It’s not enough. We need actual police presence 24/7 in the Commercial Drive and Grandview area. Without these people on foot, in plain view, these crimes just seem to be proliferating in the area,” he says.
Pogor says, “Actually implement beat officers in the neighbourhood. This is something that used to be in place in Vancouver, and it had a great, great positive impact on these issues,” because private security in the area can’t keep up.
He says the group even offered to fund a beat cop last year, but the idea went nowhere.
The VPD did not return a request for comment.
