The Vancouver School Board’s revised budget has been approved.
New Vancouver School Board trustee Dianne Turner, approved the revised budget in her first public meeting as official trustee Monday night.
The previous board was fired last month for failing to produce a balanced budget by the deadline of June 30th.
Turner says the board can now focus on next year’s budget.
“Once we got a better understanding about what the budget was and where it was in terms of what the staff had already implemented, we went ahead and said ‘well, we need to adopt this budget and accept this and move forward,'” she said.
Former trustees who lost their positions, including chairman Mike Lombardi and Patti Bacchus, were also at the meeting.
Lombardi says the budget needed more discussion.
“[I’m] very disappointed that there was no debate about a substantive issue like the budget. It was just moved, seconded and carried without any discussion,” he said.
But Turner had this to say, “I’m one trustee so I’m not going to be able to debate myself. Our greatest understanding came from staff helping us to clarify various pieces of the budget.”
The meeting took place at the VSB headquarters on West Broadway.
