Vancouver police say the deadly opioid analog Carfentanil has turned up in drugs seized in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
Investigators say they seized a drug believed to be heroin during a bust back in September at Powell and Heatly Street.
The drug was sent to Health Canada for analysis and came back today testing positive for trace amounts of the potentially fatal narcotic.
Carfentanil is 100 times more toxic than fentanyl, with a dose of just 20 micrograms being potentially fatal.
Back in June, YVRs mail centre intercepted a kilo of the drug, enough to produce 50 million doses, coming from China and destined for a Calgary address.
Today is the first known instance of the drug turning up on the city’s streets.
