One man is dead and a police officer is in hospital after alleged robbery at an East Vancouver Canadian Tire store.
Two officers responded to a robbery in progress Thursday afternoon around 3 p.m. at the Canadian Tire near Grandview Hwy and Rupert St., according to police.
When attempting to arrest the suspect, one officer was stabbed multiple times, reportedly at least once in the neck. The other officer shot and killed the suspect.
The injured officer is in hospital in stable but serious condition.
During the incident a store employee was stabbed as well and is in stable condition in hospital.
The Independent Investigations Office is now probing the scene.
A caller to the CKNW newsroom says she witnessed ten police cars speeding into the parking lot near the Canadian Tire.
Another witness says someone tried to rob the store and that he heard multiple gun shots.
He says the incident occurred on the second floor of the Canadian Tire and says the area looks like a “war zone” and is heavy with police presence, and 30-40 official vehicles.
“I guess they shot the person who tried to get away or something… I heard what I thought was a whole bunch of gunshots, and then I just heard a swarm of police coming from everywhere,” he told CKNW.
Witnesses at the scene each told CKNW the man was very large, and wearing camouflage gear. Including Philip, who says he saw the man stab an officer, and that was when police opened fire.
“And then he was lying on the ground still alive and struggling and saying ‘kill me, kill me now’ and then he took his pepper spray and started spraying the cops so like ten cops started shooting around him and then he died. Then we were told to leave the parking lot.”
Some witnesses were closer to the unfolding drama than others, including Atlin, a 9 year old boy who was close enough to the man to see the agitated look on his face.
“His head kind of had lines like when you raise your eyebrows and you raise your face up.”
The VPD say the man isn’t known to them.
