North Shore Rescue have found a missing 73-year-old hiker who lost her way on Mount Fromme shortly after dark.
The woman went for a hike on the Mountain Highway Thursday afternoon, but took a wrong turn and lost her way.
Mike Danks with North Shore Rescue says she was found at 6.30 p.m., two hours after she went missing.
“The challenge was, she had gone up some really steep terrain so she was very tired by the time we found her. So we gave her some food and warm drinks and we had to navigate a better way out for her, than the way our team members went in.”
Danks says although the woman was tired, she was in good health.
“We used the GPS to get us quite close and then just the voice contact really hones us in on exactly where she is. To find herself needing our services, I think she felt pretty bad about, but I think the main thing here is she’s OK and it’s a good lesson learned for everybody.”
Danks says hikers should always try to avoid walking alone, and that the missing woman was carrying a cell phone, which made it easier to find her.
