A compost facility in Richmond is causing a stink.
Harvest Fraser Richmond Organics is a compost site, prohibited to burn any materials.
Arnold Shuchat describes the smell.
“Garbage, sour, like mushrooms. People confusing it, I think, with the annual one or two weeks in August when we get the Turkey manure on the farms.”
“Just driving out there I started getting dry mouth and a sore throat, it’s awful, and who would want to smell that.”
Environment Manager with Metro Vancouver Ray Rob says bylaw officers are investigating.
“It is prohibited under the solid waste licence but it is also prohibited under the air quality bylaw and we are considering enforcement.”
Rob says facility owners claim spontaneous combustion is the reason for the smell.
If the problems persists, Rob says prosecution is an option.
