A man has been arrested and charged following an alleged attack on a Vancouver bus driver during which his cheekbone was broken with a screwdriver.
23-year-old Darren Lafferty is in custody, according to Transit Police, and will make his next court appearance on Nov. 28. They say the man has no fixed address at this time.
According to police, a man came aboard an empty bus on the morning of Oct. 10 without paying his fare. He then sat near the driver while holding a screwdriver.
This made the driver feel a little nervous, say police, and he asked the man to move further back into the bus.
The passenger did as he was asked, but then began to make threatening comments. From there, police say he came back to the front of the bus and allegedly hit the bus driver in the face with the screwdriver.
This caused a cut near the driver’s left eye, a fracture to his cheekbone, and broken glasses, say police.
Lafferty is known to police and has been charged with assault with a weapon.
