Five officers with the Victoria Police Department were injured last night after an arrest turned violent.
Police were called to the 400 block of Johnson Street just before 6pm where an assault had been reported.
Investigators say as soon as they arrived on scene, an officer placed one man in custody but received injuries when two other individuals became hostile and violent.
Throughout the arrest, two other officers then received injuries as well as another officer who attempted to assist the original officer.
But the violence didn’t stop there, according to VicPD Constable Matt Rutherford.
“Once the man was transported to hospital, and came back to our cells, he assaulted one of our jail staff members and that jail staff member was transported to hospital and later released.”
Rutherford says multiple charges are being recommended against three people.
“It’s concerning when five members of our organization get injured and it just shows the dangers that are involved in police work anywhere. And it is unusual for some many officers getting hurt at one time.”
Some of charges include assaulting a police officer, assault causing bodily harm of a police officer and one count of causing a disturbance.
All of the officers were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
