An insurance expert is advising homeowners whose properties were damaged by recent stormy weather to submit claims as soon as possible.
The City of Vancouver says it got more than 250 calls about fallen trees over the weekend following strong winds and heavy fall.
Director of Government Relations, Western and Pacific for the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Aaron Sutherland says homeowners should be protected by wind damage.
“Damage from wind is typically covered under a standard home insurance policy, that’s damage caused by falling debris, falling branches or even the falling tree itself and so if you do find yourself in an incident like that, you are likely insured by your home insurance policy and we really recommend individuals, when they find themselves in that instance, to begin that claims process as quickly as possible.”
Speaking on CKNW Weekend with Jody Vance, Sutherland says most insurance companies should have a 24-hour claims service.
“We really recommend that you call your insurance representative right away and talk with them, but sometimes if you’re unable to make contact with them, absolutely you need to begin the clean up process as well.”
