Friends and family members of the Surrey student who was killed by a wind-fallen tree yesterday have set up a GoFundMe page.
The Surrey community is in mourning after 16-year-old rugby player Shakir Salaam lost his life yesterday after being hit by a falling tree on his way home from school.
Shortly after his death, friends and family set up a fundraiser page in memory of Shakir, who they describe as a beautiful young man, whose kindness touched so many lives.
Tammy Larson, whose son went to school with Shakir, says she is grateful for the community’s generosity.
“I organized a GoFundMe page because Shakir is everyone’s child. No one expects their child to go to school and not come home and I am so humbled and so amazed at the strength of community at times like this.”
So far almost 20,000 dollars has been raised in memory of the teen, with funds expected to go towards funeral expenses.
Organizers say some of the money raised will go into a scholarship.
