A man who attacked a nurse in an Abbotsford hospital Emergency Room last year has received a conditional discharge from the courts.
The attack, which happened last March, left a male nurse with serious damage to his left eye.
B.C. Nurses Union President Gail Duteil calls the sentence “shocking and unacceptable.”
“[We are] very, very disappointed that it appears to be somehow acceptable to pummel an emergency room nurse and a receive a conditional discharge.”
Ryan Michael Stard pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm, and will receive three years probation for the attack.

Duteil says the union is now looking for legislative changes when it comes to attacks on health-care providers.
“We’ll be taking this forward provincially as an election issue next year, nurses, health care workers have the highest number of time off injuries of any profession.”
Duteil says the nurse suffered life-altering injuries in the attack. She says he is currently not working, and is unlikely to ever set foot in an emergency room again.
