Protesters have handed a petition to the Vancouver Mayor’s office requesting an apology and resignation of a Vancouver City Councillor.
Protest organizer Meena Wong says 1,500 people signed the open letter after Kerry Jang raised the flag of the People’s Republic of China at city hall last week.

Wong says when they approached Jang to ask him about it, he dismissed them.
“We were very offended by his reaction, his attitude, his arrogance. We demand his resignation. We don’t think he’s fit to be (a) Vancouver City Councillor.”
“When we made him aware of what’s going on, instead of apologizing, instead of trying to understand the issue, he accused us as racist and also trolls online. And our complaints as B-S.”
Several people spoke at a rally outside city hall saying they fled communist China during the Cultural Revolution.
The flag was raised Friday to celebrate China’s national holiday on a ceremonial pole that is available for use by community groups. It has previously flown the Pride and Trans flags, along with those of a number of other countries.
Jang says he will respond to the petition later this afternoon.
