A video on Facebook has gone viral after capturing a grizzly bear diving to catch salmon.
The video, posted by Knight Inlet Lodge in Vancouver Island, has close to 2 million views and almost a thousand comments.
In the video a bear is seen diving in to catch his lunch, and although the behavior may seem odd, lodge owner Dean Wyatt says more and more bears are having to learn this technique.
“I think we’ve started to see a diving bear, a swimming diving bear, about 15 years ago and it was always one or maybe two. But the last few years the fish have been holding in different areas of the river which has required that the bears adapt to this behaviour and they’ve adapted pretty well, some of them.”
The footage was taken by the lodge manager, Brian Collen, and shared on their Facebook page.
But Wyatt says they never expected it to be such a hit.
“I’m not a social media guy so I had no clue that this would go the way it’s gone. And I mean we have posted a lot of videos in the past and to be quite honest with you, because we see this activity all the time, it was a nice cute little video but we never in our wildest dreams thought that it would go so crazy.”
But he says that even before the video their lodge and the bear viewing tours they offer were so popular that they were already sold out for all of next year.
