A new study says defunding independent schools would cause further strain on public schools.
The report, carried out by the Fraser Institute, shows that cutting funds would backfire.
Many parents have called for independent schools to receive less funding in favour of public schools.
But report co-author Deani Van Pelt says scrapping funding will put even more pressure on public schools and the taxpayers.
“If that happened, our study finds that it would further strain public schools resources. That’s because independent schools tuitions would increase if the schools were defunding and many BC parents would be forced to move their kids to public schools where of course the government pays the full cost of the student’s education.”
As well, independent schools pay the full capital cost of buildings and maintenance.
