A video posted online shows hundreds of cars parked on the side of the road at Joffre Lakes Provincial Park is going viral.
The video, uploaded by Vancouverite Ryan Macdonald, is quickly gaining traction online, with thousands of views within days of being posted.
On the video the man calls on the Ministry to do something about the “absurd” parking situation at the popular site.
“I’ve been going up to joffre for several years now and two, three years ago you didn’t see this at all. Like the parking lot would get full but you just didn’t see three kilometers of cars,” Macdonald says.
Commenting below the video, he says it’s a “miracle” there hasn’t been a multi-vehicle collision yet as hundreds drive up to see the popular destination.
He calls it a “recipe for disaster.”
“It’s reached a breaking point where a Ministry has to do something. Like either expand the parking facilities and put a ranger there full time with the ability to give people a heads up.”
The video also shows a car being towed out of a ditch after what looks like a parking attempt gone wrong.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment says the Labour Day long weekend often brings last-chance campers, bumping the number of visitors, and that the problem is being looked at.
“BC Parks is constantly working to improve visitor safety and services, including periodic reviews of our current polices to ensure they are best meeting the needs of the majority of our park visitors including visitors to parks such as Joffre Lakes… Additionally, BC Parks is working to address parking congestion by re-configuring the existing parking lot.”
