Posters plastered around the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood suggesting ‘Balaclava Rapist’ Larry Takahashi may have been spotted in the area have turned out to be a false alarm.
That from Vancouver Police Department Acting Sergeant Brian Montague, who says Takahashi has not been outside his Vancouver halfway house.
“Any of the sightings people have been talking about have not been Larry Takahashi. They have not been this gentleman because he has not left his halfway house.”
Community concern from at least one resident was made public after posters were splashed around the neighbourhood with a description of the Balaclava Rapist and the accusation that Takahashi took the #8 bus weekday mornings.
Montague calls this a “phantom sighting” at this point in time.
“He will eventually leave his halfway house, he’s not confined to it. We want people to call 911 if they have a concern or if they see Mr. Takahashi violating any of his conditions.”
Montague worries someone may take matters into their own hands if they see someone who looks like Larry Takahashi out in public.
And while he understands people are worried about Takahashi living in Vancouver, the best way residents can stay safe is to call 911 if they have any immediate concerns.
