Where’s the student housing?
A new study suggests it’s not just a B.C. housing crisis, but it’s also a student housing crisis.
Over the long weekend, several thousand new students moved into dorms at post-secondary institutions, but Alex McGowan with the Alliance of B.C. Students says there were some who weren’t as lucky.
He says no new student housing outside UBC has been built in the last 10 years, and it’s left many out in the cold.
“We found there’s a severe lack of availability of student housing. For the universities that have housing like UBC or SFU, there’s massive waitlists. 40 students are lining up for a zero bedroom basement suite because there’s just no housing.”
The Alliance is calling on the Province to not just remove the red tape currently in place that’s preventing new student housing, but also to allow universities to apply to take on debt to build it, which he says would be self-financed by residence fees.
