Airbnb is at it again trying to lure in new Vancouver hosts.
First it teamed up with Car 2 Go, offering new hosts 250 free minutes to list their place.
Now, it’s out with a new incentive to keep gaining new users.
Airbnb is offering people $250 who sign up and complete a booking by the end of September.
Councillor George Affleck calls the move aggressive.
“There’s a fine line from what city hall can do, if people want to operate a business in their home there are certain restrictions that already exist, and we’re certainly looking at tightening those up.”
The city has said it’s looking at ways to crack down on the short term rental industry.
But Affleck says there’s not much the city can do right now.
“Airbnb or any company has the right to market themselves and if this is the way they choose to do it then that’s their prerogative. Airbnb is part of the problem that people are not renting their units for long term and it’s certainly having an impact. But can we stop this…that’s the question we will be addressing in the fall.”
To qualify for Airbnb’s latest offer, the listing must be located within 25 miles of downtown Vancouver and created by a new host.
