The Ross Street Sikh Temple in south Vancouver is badly damaged after a fire overnight.
It happened around 2am on the second floor of the temple on Marine Drive.
Assistant chief Dale Bruce says firefighters had trouble battling the blaze because the temple was poorly ventilated and didn’t have sprinklers.
“Because the building was fully charged with smoke and heat and fire gases, they pulled the crews out, upgraded the alarm to a second alarm and prepared to gain access with a group instead of a team.”
Bruce says no injuries were reported and religious books and relics were safely removed from the building.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
