The suspicious fire that tore through an east Vancouver School has caused major damage to a key building.
After assessing the damage, the Vancouver School Board hopes to have an update on what that means for students soon.
“It’s very disconcerting.”
That’s how VSB Chair Mike Lombardi describes knowledge the fire at Sir Guy Carleton may have been deliberately set.
Staff toured the property yesterday and Lombardi says the four alarm blaze has left its main building in rough shape.
“Yesterday was focusing more on getting an assessment of the actual state of the facility. Today and tomorrow the conversation will be focusing on now that we know about the state of the building and the operations, what are the actual options so that we can start school in September in the smoothest way possible.”
“You can imagine a fire that went for four hours, extensive smoke and water damage, and we’re very concerned about the state of it.”
There are four other buildings on the property, Lombardi says staff meet again today to weigh options for students.
He says they’re hoping to reach out to parents by tonight or tomorrow.
