It’s an effort to bring down the number of overdose-related visits to the emergency room.
Vancouver Coastal Health will give supervised injection site Insite, extended hours on certain days.
The figures – tracked between January and May of this year – show a staggering 80 percent increase in overdose related visits to the emergency room.
Speaking for the Authority, Dr. Ron Joe says those hours will kick in during weeks where social assistance cheques are distributed.
“What we’re proposing to do is operate Insite 24 hours a day, for the days following cheque issue, and hopefully, we will be able to prevent some of the increase in overdoses that we’re seeing.”
This is a pilot project, slated to operate for six months as of next week.
