Despite increasing the number of surgeries and diagnostic exams, B.C. is facing unprecedented demand for health care services.
The Health Ministry says Health Authorities in B.C. with the oldest populations face significant challenges with wait times for surgical procedures.
The procedures tend to be age-related – for instance, joint replacements involving the hips and knees, or cataract surgeries.
There were 553,811 surgical procedures done in this province in 2014 – 2015, a 36% increase compared with 2001-2002.
In the Fraser Health Region, there were 196,150 surgical procedures carried out in the last fiscal year and 103,500 in Vancouver Coastal Health facilities.
With an injection of $25 million last year, health authorities carried out 8500 additional surgeries.
