Richmond RCMP are investigating after an alleged sexual assault on an Air Canada flight from Toronto bound for YVR.
It happened shortly before 4 a.m. this morning.
It’s believed the suspect, a 39-year-old Pakistani national, was observed inappropriately touching a female passenger as she was sleeping.
Mounties say that man was escorted off the flight and detained by officers once the plane touched down.
Natasha Carpio was on the flight and recounted what she saw at the end.
“All I remember was that it was a full flight. I knew there were no empty seats whatsoever, however when the lights came on I noticed the man that was across the aisle from me was now sitting by himslf and there were now two empty seats beside him.”
Carpio says passengers were trying to determine what happened when officers came on board to take him into custody.
“We all agreed we heard that the flight attendant apologize to someone and somebody at the back said that he did see a female all of a sudden move seats during the altercation. And that’s how we sort of pieced together that something must’ve occurred between the person that was escorted off the flight and the female passenger.”
She says the worry over presence of RCMP was felt by everyone on board.
“You could just sense the nervousness and the apprehension on everybody’s faces as the RCMP officers were coming towards the back of the plane.”
Carpio says being a passenger on that flight was an uncomfortable experience.
“Extremely shaken up, especially considering that I only received my seat assignment pretty much a few moments before boarding because the number of delays occurred. There was a chance that it could’ve been me that was sitting beside that specific passenger.”
A spokesperson for Air Canada would only say a passenger became unruly on flight A-C 151 travelling from Toronto to Vancouver.
Richmond RCMP’s YVR Detachment are investigating.
