The Kitsilano Coast Guard base has officially reopened.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard say the base will have an expanded role that includes emergency environmental responses.
Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard Dominic LeBlanc says there is now 24-7 search and rescue coverage from the base.
“And since the May 1st opening, over 100 search and rescue calls and 13 environment response calls were undertaken from this base and that in just the last three months alone.”
The base will also offer emergency response exercise training for coastal communities including indigenous groups.
The base had a soft open earlier this year and has a small crew with three vessels.
The Federal Conservatives closed the base in 2013.
