Ahead of the opening ceremonies from Rio, a new poll suggests Canadians are feeling less than enthusiastic about this year’s Olympics.
The poll, conducted by Angus Reid suggests scandals, health and safety concerns, and allegations of bribery and corruption, are all reasons why Canadians aren’t feeling the love for Rio.
Just over one-in-ten Canadians surveyed suggested they’re “very interested” in the Olympics, while almost half say they’re either not that interested, or not interested at all.
A staggering 81% of Canadians are feeling jaded about the Olympics, suggesting the games are more about corporate sponsors and commercialization than the athletes and competition themselves.
The woes surrounding the Zika virus have also played a factor, with just over half of respondents saying if a friend of family member was an athlete, they’d want that person to stay home instead of compete.
