The deadline for City of Vancouver residents to weigh in on short-term housing rentals, such as Airbnb, is tonight.
City councillor Geoff Meggs has been a proponent of taxing Airbnb hosts as if they were hotels, but says the survey will give officials insight into what Vancouver thinks of short-term rentals.
“We’re not talking about prohibition here. We’re going to wind up with some new outcome I think which reflects the need to protect consumers, the need to protect affordability, and the need to provide for some public safety.”
City data released in mid-July showed there were up to five thousand active short-term rentals in Vancouver, with 85 per cent of those being listed on Airbnb.
