A Surrey Man says he’s the victim of a hate crime.
“He looked at me and said ‘you using foreign language, go back to your F*(&%g country'”
Dino Demir, a Turkish speaking man says he was on the phone talking to his friend in his native language at Starbucks on Denman and Davie last Thursday, during Pride Week.
He was on the patio, he then noticed two men talking and point at him — one drinking beer.
Demir told the man he shouldn’t be drinking in public.
That’s when a fight allegedly broke out.
“He start swearing at me. I looked at him and said that we all come from somewhere ‘where did you come from, I don’t think you’re Canadian, where are you from’, when I said that, he punched my jaw.”
Demir says the man threw him into a bush before he left the patio.
Constable Brian Montague with the Vancouver Police Department says police are recommending one charge of assault against an unnamed 54-year-old Vancouver man and the incident will be reviewed by the department’s hate crime investigator.
Demir was released from hospital and is recovering from a deviated nose.
