At Saturday night’s Celebration of Light finale, Team USA’s Disney themed show attracted at least 500,000 people… and that’s just on the English Bay side.
It was so busy, officials had to shut down beach access half an hour before the show even started.
The beach was so full, people packed streets and sidewalks.
Constable Brian Montague with the Vancouver Police Department says it’s the biggest crowd he’s seen in 26 years.
“We were over capacity on the beach we actually had to have officers only allow people off the beach and not allow them on.”
Two people were taken to hospital.
“We had a couple of medical emergencies, where we had to try and extricate patience with BC Ambulance and Vancouver Fire Rescue, so that was a bit of a challenge getting emergency crews into the large crowds and getting patients out.”
“We had a couple heart attacks in the crowd”
Montague says both patients are recovering.
As for troublemakers, he says just a handful.
“Dealing with individuals that were too intoxicated or our officers felt were going to cause problems in the crowd.”
Montague says on average fireworks spectators have been well behaved in the last 5 years.
