An autopsy is being performed today on the body of a five-year-old Taliyah Leigh Marsman, who had been the subject of an Amber Alert since Tuesday.
Police believe the mother of the Calgary girl, Sara Baillie, was the main murder target.
Baillie’s body was found in her home on Monday, and the girl’s body was found in a rural area yesterday.
Forty-six-year-old Edward Delten Downey is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
Police says Downey has had prior convictions for trafficking cocaine.
He is currently the only suspect, but police say they will continue to investigate.
No stranger to the family
Inspector Don Coleman says the tragic circumstances around the case are devastating for everyone who was hoping for a happier outcome.
“The family is devastated, the investigators involved obviously impacted, but there’s lots of work to still do.”
Coleman also says Downey was no stranger to the family.
“We believe that Mr. Downey is known to all three; Sara, Taliyah and the father Colin, we believe that to be the case… [but] I don’t know what the level of trust would have been there.”
