The father of 5-year-old Taliyah Marsman is not the man police have in custody in connection with the disappearance of the girl and the death of her mother.
Colin Marsman tells Global News he does not know who police have in custody, and he doesn’t recognize the vehicle involved in the investigation.
Earlier this morning Calgary police announced they have a man in custody for questioning in the Amber Alert. No charges have been laid.
Police search area near Calgary
They also announced they’re searching an area near Chestermere, east of Calgary. Detective Andy Nguyen says they’re hoping to find the girl there.
He added that there’s no indication whether they’ll find her alive.
The Amber Alert was issued early Tuesday after Taliyah could not be found following the discovery of her mother Sara Baillie, dead in her northwest Calgary home.
Taliyah’s godmother, Tanya Kruger, told Global News she believes the five-year-old will be returned safely.
“I think we all in her family have one suspect in mind, not that I want to mention it, but that’s for Police, but I know that justice will be served.”
Yesterday Calgary Police said a girl matching Taliyah’s description was spotted just hours before her mother’s body was found, and they have reason to believe Taliyah is being cared for.
Footage believed to be last known sighting
Police also obtained CCTV footage which may be the last known sighting of Taliyah Marsman, about nine hours before her mother was found dead.
Investigators released the images, captured Sunday, July 10, 2016, at around 5:30 p.m., which show 34-year-old Sara Baillie and her daughter at a Calgary Dairy Queen.
Police say the footage appears to show Baillie speaking with a family at the restaurant.
The girl who witnesses saw was wearing red or pink boots with white polka dots and was carrying a reddish-coloured suitcase.
Possibly sighted with unknown male driving grey car
Investigators also say witnesses saw a girl matching Taliyah’s description on Monday around 11:30, with a stocky, black male.
Police think the man was driving a dark grey sedan in the Panorama community, close to where homicide victim Sara Baille’s car was recovered.
CCTV footage obtained shows the car around the time when Taliyah was last believed to have been seen.
