Mayor Gregor Roberston has compared some areas around Cedar Cottage to the Downtown Eastside, but there’s no word beyond cleaning up the litter in that neighbourhood.
Yesterday we reported on the number of used needles and condoms left on the sidewalk along Kingsway between Knight and Fraser.
That has had local residents for months calling on the city to do something about it.
Mayor Gregor Robertson says he has heard the concerns over IV drug use and sex trade workers on that street.
“City staff are working on how to address that, we’ve typically seen that more concentrated on the Downtown Eastside but certainly it does show up in other parts of the city.”
But while Robertson acknowledges the problem, he wasn’t able to offer any details about plans to curb the problem.
“We’re trying to deal with it more proactively and upstream what are the causes of that, that’s where we’re focused it’s making sure sure we’re taking a modern approach to a problem like that which is emerging in that neighbourhood now.”
In the meantime, Robertson says more staff have been assigned to clean up the litter on Vancouver streets.
