A spectacular fireworks display is going ahead tonight from Canada Place.
But some proud Canadians may be thinking about holding their own private show in their backyard.
Vancouver Fire’s Ron Coulson says that’s an unwise decision, saying fireworks are banned on Canada Day unless you have a permit.
Coulson says lighting fireworks tonight comes with a risk of a steep penalty.
“They could expect a bylaw officer or perhaps Vancouver police visiting them. And they run the risk of a by-law fine.”
“They’re only allowed under special circumstances under a permit that’s granted by the fire chief, and in today’s situation, the only permit that we’re aware of is the big display in Coal Harbour.”
Coulson adds it varies among municipalities but generally fireworks are prohibited across the Lower Mainland.
